Card Deck Packaging

Custom Card Deck Packaging: Folding Box vs Gift Box

Choose custom card deck packaging by use: TTTB folding boxes for promotional or compact retail decks, or rigid gift boxes for premium sets. Compare materials and pack-out.

Short Answer

Choose a card-deck package by its use and positioning, then size it around one complete set. For a promotional giveaway or a price-sensitive souvenir, a printed tuck top tuck bottom (TTTB) folding box is often a practical starting point. A Flash Card deck sold on a physical retail display may use a TTTB box with a hanging hook or tab when the display method calls for it; this is less typical for other card products. For a higher-positioned souvenir, a premium independent-website or Amazon product, or an event gift with a larger packaging budget, discuss a rigid gift box such as a lid-and-base, drawer or hinged-lid structure.

These are common planning directions, not fixed rules. Souvenirs can sit in either tier, and an ecommerce channel does not automatically require a gift box. The buyer’s budget, customer experience, display method and complete card-set contents determine the better option. A box should be approved with the actual cards, any instruction card or booklet, inner packing and finished stack thickness inside it.

South Print’s custom Memory Card and card-deck printing page lists cardstock boxes, paper boxes and custom retail packaging as project options. The matching-game example shows one boxed-set direction. Neither page means every deck must use the same box.

Two Packaging Families, Chosen by Use

Rigid gift boxHigher-positioned souvenirs, premium ecommerce sets and higher-budget event giftsLid-and-base, drawer or hinged-lid boxOpening experience, tray or inner pack, fit, assembly and packed volume

A sleeve may still be used as an extra printed wrap around an already contained deck or as the outer shell of a drawer-style box. It is not a third default container for loose cards. Confirm what holds the cards when a separate decorative sleeve is removed. Likewise, shrink wrap can protect a unit in distribution but is not automatically a reusable storage box.

Start With the Deck, Not the Box Photograph

Box dimensions follow the physical stack, not just the nominal card size. For example, a 48-card matching game, two instruction cards and a folded leaflet occupy more space than 48 bare cards. Board thickness, surface treatment, corner shape, inner wrap and the compression of a finished stack all influence fit. A box that looks correct in a render can be difficult to close once the real contents are inside.

Define the deck as total physical cards per set. For a Memory Card matching game, state pair count as well. A 24-pair game normally means 48 matching cards, before title, instruction or special cards. The Memory Card vs Flash Card guide explains why a learning deck may use a different count and content structure. If several card designs or languages share one outer box, list the quantity and card sequence for each version.

Before requesting a dieline, confirm:

  • Finished card width and height, corner shape and proposed stock or thickness.
  • Total cards per set, including title, rule, divider or promotional cards.
  • Whether cards are collated in a required order or separated into multiple mini-decks.
  • Booklet or instruction-sheet size, page count and folded thickness, if included.
  • Inner wrap, bag, tray or other containment, if required.
  • Barcode, warning, age or market-specific copy supplied by the brand or importer.
  • Finished box orientation and how the buyer wants the deck to open.

The card and box dielines should come from the agreed production specification. A supplier’s template for another card size or stack depth should not be resized casually. South Print’s Memory Card artwork guide covers pair lists, common backs and separate card/box files.

TTTB Folding Boxes for Promotions and Compact Retail Sets

A printed TTTB folding box is a common starting point for promotional cards, lower-cost souvenirs, Flash Cards and other compact decks. It can carry the title, image, card count, instructions or barcode area on its panels. The top and bottom tuck in, but the exact flap layout and locking details still need a supplier-approved dieline. This folding box is the product’s own package, not the export shipping carton.

Printed card-game deck with a tuck top tuck bottom folding box

South Print product photo: a card-game deck and its TTTB folding box. The structure shown is an example; box size, stock and artwork should be confirmed for each order.

Ask to see a filled sample. The box must accommodate the complete stack without crushing the cards, but excessive clearance can let the cards move around. Check that the flap closes, survives normal opening and does not cover essential copy. If a booklet shares the box, confirm whether it sits above the cards, beside them or inside a separate folded section.

For South Print projects, the common material range for a TTTB folding box is 300-350 gsm white card. A 250 gsm white card may be considered where cost pressure is especially high, but it is not an automatic substitute: box size, deck weight, handling and how the box closes must be checked with a filled sample. GSM is material weight, not a guarantee that every sheet at that weight has the same thickness or strength. The chosen stock, print finish, die and assembly work all affect the final quote.

For repeated classroom use, the opening experience matters: a box that is easy to close and put away may be more useful than an elaborate finish. For a promotional deck, compare the cost of the complete packed set, including printing, die cutting, assembly and any inner wrap; the simplest-looking box is not automatically cheapest for every quantity.

Hanging-Hook TTTB Boxes for Some Flash Cards

A TTTB folding box can include a hanging hook or tab for a physical retail display. South Print sees this more often with Flash Cards than with other card decks. It is a channel-specific variation, not the default package for every card product. The buyer should confirm the retailer’s peg or hook format, hanging direction, filled unit weight, available display space and the position of the barcode and required product information. The hanging feature and surrounding paperboard need to be checked on a filled sample before mass production.

Adding a hanging feature changes the dieline and may change material or reinforcement needs. Do not assume a 250 gsm box that works on a shelf will also hold up on a peg. Equally, an online-only deck has no reason to pay for a hanging tab unless it will also enter physical retail.

Gift Boxes for Higher-Positioned Card Sets

A rigid gift box can support a more presentation-focused souvenir, a premium independent-website or Amazon set, or a higher-budget event gift. South Print commonly discusses 157 gsm coated art paper wrapped over 1.5-2 mm greyboard as a starting material construction for these boxes. The exact board thickness and wrap paper must be chosen for the dimensions, weight, structure and finish of the real set; this is not one mandatory recipe or fixed price.

Three structures are worth comparing:

Gift-box structureOpening experienceImportant fit check
Lid-and-base (two-piece)Separate lid lifts off the baseLid fit, card or tray lift-out and finished box depth
Drawer boxInner tray slides from an outer shellPull tab or finger access, slide friction and tray contents
Hinged-lid boxLid remains connected to the baseHinge movement, closure method and room for cards or booklet

These describe structures, not a promise that every variation is in stock. A drawer box’s outer sleeve is part of the box construction; it should not be confused with a separate decorative band around a complete package. A tray, divider, magnetic closure or ribbon is an additional specification and should never be assumed from a reference photograph.

Rigid construction changes assembly, unit weight and packed volume. Check how the customer opens the box, removes the cards and returns them to the correct space. Confirm that the full box fits the export carton and the intended fulfillment route. A gift box may be appropriate even for a promotional campaign when presentation matters and the budget allows it; the word “promotion” does not force a TTTB box.

If the project will be sold through an ecommerce warehouse, compare unit weight and packed volume along with presentation. A more substantial box can increase freight and storage burden; the actual effect must be calculated from the final pack-out, not guessed from a sample picture.

Compare Complete Units, Not Empty Boxes

Buyer useLikely starting pointWhat can change the decision
Price-sensitive promotional or souvenir deckTTTB folding boxFilled weight, box strength, handling and quantity
Flash Cards sold on a physical hanging displayHanging-hook TTTB boxRetailer peg format, hang strength, barcode and display orientation
Everyday Memory Card or learning deckPrinted folding box or another confirmed reusable packagePair count, total cards, instructions and repeated opening
Premium ecommerce, museum or event-gift deckLid-and-base, drawer or hinged-lid gift boxOpening experience, insert or tray, unit weight and budget

These are planning examples, not mandatory pairings. A premium learning deck can use a rigid box, while a gift deck can use an attractive folding box. Packaging should follow use, contents and budget. If cards are intended for children, the buyer should separately confirm applicable age grading, warnings, test and market requirements for the finished set; box choice alone does not establish compliance.

When comparing quotes, request the same complete specification from every supplier: cards, folding box or gift box, any hanging feature, inner wrapping, inserts, collation, unit packing, export cartons and shipping terms. A quote for cards in shrink wrap is not directly comparable with a quote for a fully assembled boxed retail set. South Print’s published Flash Card reference price applies only to its stated standard Flash Card set with a cardstock box. It is not a Memory Card price and cannot be used as a fixed price for a hanging-hook box or rigid gift box.

What to Send for an Accurate Packaging Quote

Send the supplier a short bill of contents and a reference image showing the intended opening experience. Include card dimensions, total cards and pairs per set, chosen stock or desired feel, finish, box type, instruction content, inner pack, quantity by artwork version, sales channel, destination country and required shipment terms. Specify whether the quote should include packing the cards into each box and whether export cartons or retail labels are part of the scope.

Ask for at least two like-for-like pack-out options if you are deciding between structures. For example, compare a filled TTTB box with a filled lid-and-base gift box for the same cards, booklet and order quantity. A physical sample should confirm that the cards and booklet fit, the closure works and the printed panels align. Any hanging hook, tray, special finish or decorative sleeve should be priced as a distinct option.

FAQ

Is 250 gsm white card enough for a TTTB box?

Sometimes, for a cost-sensitive project, but do not decide from gsm alone. The filled deck weight, box dimensions, closure and handling need to be checked on the proposed material. South Print more commonly discusses 300-350 gsm white card for TTTB boxes.

Do all Flash Card boxes need a hanging hook?

No. A hanging-hook TTTB box is mainly relevant when the Flash Cards will be displayed on pegs in a physical store. Other retail or online channels may use a box without a hook. Confirm the retailer’s display method before changing the dieline.

Which gift-box structures can work for a custom card deck?

Lid-and-base, drawer and hinged-lid boxes are common structures to discuss. Choose by the intended opening experience, full contents, weight and budget. Any tray, ribbon or magnetic closure needs its own specification and quote.

How do I calculate the box size for 48 cards?

Start with the actual card dimensions and finished stack thickness, then add any instruction cards, booklet and inner pack. The supplier should calculate the internal fit for the proposed structure and confirm it with a packed sample. Card count alone is not enough.

Can one box design be used for several card-deck versions?

Possibly, if all versions have the same packed dimensions and the box information is correct for each version. List card count, language, artwork, barcode and any inserts by SKU; approve each printed version before production.

Does South Print’s Flash Card reference price include a rigid gift box?

No. The published reference is for a specified standard Flash Card set with a cardstock box. Memory Card games, hanging-hook boxes and rigid gift boxes need their own quote based on the full specification.
