Short Answer

South Print normally uses gloss varnish as the default surface finish for custom printed jigsaw puzzles. Other options include gloss lamination, matte lamination, soft-touch lamination, fine-glitter film and surface embossing. Specify the finish in the quotation rather than relying on the word glossy or premium.

Choose around how the artwork looks during assembly, how the pieces feel and the intended product experience. Compare physical samples before approving a special finish. A finish name alone does not establish scratch resistance, water resistance or suitability for a particular age group.

Varnish and Film Are Different Specifications

Gloss varnish is a coating; gloss lamination adds a separate film. Both can produce a glossy appearance, but they are not interchangeable order descriptions. No lamination does not mean no surface treatment: a puzzle can have gloss varnish without a laminated film.

South Print’s default gloss varnish should not automatically be described as UV varnish or assigned a particular coating chemistry. Confirm any specific coating requirement when requesting the quote.

These are selection points, not a ranking of durability or price. Gloss varnish is the normal default; request a separate project-specific quote for any other finish. Confirm the actual finish specification and its compatibility with the puzzle construction.

Gloss Varnish: Start With the Default

Use gloss varnish as the starting specification when asking South Print for a standard puzzle quote. Review the picture under the lighting where people are likely to assemble it, especially when the design contains large dark areas or small details.

For a promotional giveaway, first decide whether the standard appearance meets the campaign brief. Do not add a special finish simply because the product is a gift.

Gloss Lamination: Request a Film, Not Just Shine

Choose this option for comparison when a glossy film surface is part of the intended product. Inspect reflections across the assembled picture and how the pieces handle.

Do not assume a laminated puzzle is waterproof. The complete construction, including cut edges and backing, matters. Any performance claim needs separate support.

Matte Lamination: Evaluate the Picture During Play

Matte lamination is worth comparing when lower surface sheen is important. Examine the actual artwork rather than assuming every matte finish gives the same result.

Check dark sections, subtle color differences and small visual clues used to identify pieces. A finish that looks attractive in a product photograph still needs to work during assembly. Matte does not mean completely glare-free.

Soft-Touch Lamination: Approve the Feel Physically

Soft-touch lamination is an option when handling is part of the desired experience. Confirm the specific film and feel rather than treating all soft-touch products as equivalent.

Handle a representative sample and inspect it afterward. Agree any requirements for marking or abrasion separately; the name does not guarantee anti-scratch performance.

Fine-Glitter Film: Balance Sparkle and Readability

Use an actual film sample to select the fine-glitter effect. Ask how it appears on light and dark printed areas and whether the sparkle competes with important details in the picture.

Do not substitute a holographic effect, loose glitter or glitter varnish in the specification without agreement. A photograph can help discuss the effect, but it cannot fully show its appearance at different angles.

Surface Embossing: Identify the Texture

Request a reference for the intended pattern and depth. Do not assume surface embossing means a raised logo, a particular linen texture or a universal standard pattern.

Check how the texture interacts with fine lines and printed details. Confirm which construction is being proposed and whether any additional surface treatment is included. Do not assume all six options can be combined.

Choose for the Intended Use

For promotional puzzles, compare the default gloss varnish with any campaign-specific requirement before adding complexity. For retail puzzles, consider the assembly experience as well as shelf presentation. For corporate gifts, decide whether a tactile or decorative effect actually supports the gift concept.

These uses overlap: a retail puzzle does not automatically need a special film, and a promotional puzzle is not limited to one finish. Keep the puzzle surface and box finish as separate specifications. Our puzzle packaging guide covers packaging choices for these uses.

Inspect Finished Pieces, Not Only an Uncut Sheet

An uncut sample helps compare surface appearance, but it does not establish the result after cutting. For the agreed representative sample:

  • Compare reflection and detail under consistent lighting.
  • Handle individual pieces and assemble a section.
  • Inspect cut edges and tabs for lifting, peeling or damage.
  • Check texture or sparkle across the assembled image.
  • Record the material, finish reference and any sample substitutions.

Use the puzzle sample checklist for wider construction checks. The proof and sample approval guide explains how to record limited approvals.

What to Include in the Quote Request

Send puzzle size, piece count, quantity per design, artwork and intended use. Name the requested surface finish, identify a physical reference when available, and specify the box finish separately.

Ask for alternatives against the same underlying specification so the comparison is meaningful. Do not apply a fixed percentage surcharge to every order. Materials, quantity and the actual process need to be quoted together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the default finish for South Print puzzles?

The normal default is gloss varnish. Confirm it in the quotation, especially when requesting a different surface effect or comparing suppliers.

Is gloss varnish the same as gloss lamination?

No. Gloss varnish is a coating, while gloss lamination adds a separate film. Specify the process rather than only asking for a glossy puzzle.

Does no lamination mean an untreated puzzle?

No. A puzzle can have gloss varnish without a laminated film. State the intended surface treatment explicitly.

Can I approve soft-touch or fine-glitter film from a photo?

A photo can help discuss appearance, but it does not establish tactile feel or the full effect under changing angles. Agree a representative physical sample or reference.

Does lamination make a puzzle waterproof or scratch-proof?

Do not assume either claim. Performance depends on the complete construction and the specified finish. Confirm any required testing and acceptance criteria separately.
